The following plan should be used for Section B of the Essay. You should answer one of the two COLLECTIVE IDENTITY questions responding to MUSLIM REPRESENTATION.
- Aims and Objectives: Answer the question in a paragraph. This section should explain exactly what you think. It should outline the following points - Whether you think that the Media presents a Collective Identity based on the films and tv shows you have studied. Whether you think that the Media are mediating the identity of Muslims. You should also briefly explain the effects of the mediation of Muslim Identity. This section should also explain how Identity is mediated through language and explain that the term Muslim has now become synonymous the term Terrorism. Your essay will explain how a term which was originally intended to express civility and peace now expresses an understanding of barbarity and vengeance.
- Introduce the Linguistic Theory. Identity is constructed through language so you should explain this and introduce Lacan's Mirror Stage and the concept of the Other and Otherness. From here you should explain Derrida's Binary Opposition and explain that the Media present Binary Oppositions in their representations of Muslims. From here you should explain how these Binary Oppositions are withheld using languages, both linguistic and visual which Lyotard would describe as Differnds or Phrases in Dispute. Finally you should explain that the presentations that the Media present of Muslims is considered by Edward Said to be Orientalist. You should then explain Orientalism.
- Case Study 1, 2, 3, 4. Now, you should conduct a representational analysis illustrating whether or not a collective Muslim identity is being expressed and whether Said would consider the representations Orientalist. You will do this by identifying and assessing Binary Oppositions and Differends within the text.
- Conclusion: Your conclusion should reflect your introduction. It should include a brief overview of the analysis in the case studies and should explain that Muslims are often reflected in the Media with issues surrounding terrorism and as a result the term Muslim has become synonymous with terrorism which Said would consider Orientalist. You should also conclude that the issue of Muslim Representation and Terrorism has proliferated due to the circumstances surrounding the recent murder in Woolwich of a UK soldier which has sparked new debate of the term Muslim and Terrorist. Does this present a Binary Opposition through a Differend which produces Orientalist discourse. Please watch EDL leader, Tommy Robinson's and the BNP's Nick Griffin comments on You Tube and then answer that question.
